Helyn Cornille has been a lover of cats for a very long time. But she doesn’t just love cats, she loves helping them, too. For Helyn, she wants to give cats that have been abandoned a better life. Many years ago, she got a brilliant idea. She’d been rescuing animals for several years and wanted to do something special for them. This is how her dream of creating “Catville” got its start.
With her beautiful vision in mind, Helen went to work creating cat houses that were colorful, unique, and simply delightful to look at. But she didn’t stop there. She went on to create a safe haven that is Catville today—complete with its very own pond!
“I believe in enrichment environments…and I have dreamed for years to make Catville,” Helen shared with me. “We live in the country with many feral cats, we catch them, take to vets and raise and love them.”
Helen and her husband live on a farm in Eatonton, Georgia which allows them the space to create this feline sanctuary. She told me that, “Most of the cats were feral. Some strays, some dumped. We love them all.”
Off her guest house is where the Catville location sits on her farm. The cats call this area their home and they’re truly happy to be there.
“The cats are very happy and much loved, and we continue to tweak this out for them. In the catio, we have many ways for them to come and go and go around each other to prevent conflicts. The windows to go outside have thick plastic strips that keep bugs and heat or cold out but they can go through easily.”
Every cat here is fully provided for by Helen and her big heart. Catville has cats that are old, some deaf and/or missing teeth, and even kittens that were found abandoned and had to be bottle fed in order to survive. There are currently 18 cats living the good life at Catville. Helyn is mindful of overcrowding and allowing each cat to have adequate space. This way, each of the kitties gets the best quality of life possible. Additionally, she is also committed to ongoing TNR efforts for other cats in her area.
Catville in Georgia is like something out of a feline Hollywood movie set if there ever was one. There’s the pond with a waterfall, a hill that that the cats love, quaint little cat houses with paving stones and a courtyard just for the kitties.
The cats have their homes, but there are also multiple perches and furniture placed strategically throughout for the cats to kick back and relax on. You know, every cat needs their own designated cat nap spot!
And just like any devoted cat owner, she spoils her Catville cats with new toys, too.
And while all she’s done not only for these cats but with Catville is unbelievably impressive, Helyn plans to do even more. She wants to help as many cats as she can, and has big plans for Catville upgrades—including forest mural walls to attach to the outside wall of the guest house.
I was obviously impressed by all that she’s done to give these second chance kitties a life full of love and enrichment. She humbly said that it’s been a true “labor of love” and it brings her much happiness.
These cats are getting treated with kindness and care from a truly incredible angel on Earth. The world needs more people like you Helyn, thank you for letting me share your story!
