Original Story – 12/23/2019:
I don’t know about you, but I just love happy endings. And this is especially true when it comes to happy endings for cats! For one kitten named Ilene, she didn’t have an easy start at life. She was abandoned, found wrapped in a bag in a pile of trash in California. And it was pouring down rain when she was discovered, scared, shivering and all alone. But that’s not even the worst part. Her start at life was already hard enough, as this precious kitten born without eyes had to face the world without the ability to see it.
It was reported that, “A good Samaritan heard her cries for help, wrapped her in a t-shirt and brought her to the local animal shelter in Madera, CA.”
Mia Heaslet, OHS Second Chance Program Manager, says that: “When we got the call to help with Ilene, we immediately said ‘yes’…We are fortunate at OHS to have a great medical team who are well versed in unusual conditions.”
For little Ilene, she proved to everyone that she met that her spirit was unbreakable. Right from the start, she was nothing but affectionate and sweet. This was a kitten that was taking her second chance of life with an open heart, and she brought much joy to all those she encountered at the Oregon Humane Society.
“Not being able to see has not slowed Ilene down a bit. She is a happy, playful kitten.” — Dr. Maia Titcomb, an OHS veterinarian
To prevent further infection, it was deemed necessary to perform surgery on her eyes.
“It’s likely that she has a condition called microphthalmia in both eyes and was already blind,” says Dr. Maia Titcomb, OHS veterinarian. “This condition is usually caused by a congenital defect in cats, but can also be due to trauma or infection.”
But on Saturday, December 14th, one human stepped in to give little Ilene the loving and forever home she rightfully deserves.

We’re so glad that this rescue kitty got her happy ending. And hopefully, she can inspire others to adopt cats and kittens with special needs, too. Special needs cats have so much love to give, and Ilene is living proof of it.
